Zombieland: A thrill ride

June 22, 2010

‘Zombieland’ is one of the most offensive films I have ever seen. I loved it! Yes, it is filled with the obligatory zombie killing that the genre requires (and which is executed with great glee by an ass kicking Woody Harrelson), but more importantly it is side splittingly politically incorrect.

In a nutshell…

America’s gone to hell. Zombies are running around eating the remaining humans. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) meets up with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) on a deserted highway and the unlikely duo start a journey together. They are soon conned by a couple of girls.

The mood of the film…

It is an 80minute thrill ride filled with action, gore and authentically funny one-liners. There are even a few heartfelt moments and some social commentary thrown in, but the film stays true to the horror-comedy genre and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Best one-liner…

When the boys are hustled out of their car they are forced to continue on foot. They soon find a replacement vehicle, a yellow Hummer parked in front of a dodgy looking house. The keys are in the ignition and the backseat sports a duffel bag full of big guns.

Tallahassee promptly looks up at the sky and says, ‘Thank God for rednecks!’

Best scene…

The opening sequence as a whole is the highlight of the film (and probably the most offensive). As Columbus narrates the rules of surviving in Zombieland, a visual reference is given. Rule #3 or 4 is wear your seatbelt, because it is a bumpy ride. The visual given is a group of young girls dressed in little pink dresses at a party, trying to break into the minivan of the carpooling mom. The mom manages to get away from the flesh eating young ones, just to crash into another car. She, and all her dashboard animals, flies through the windscreen!

What makes the film relevant today?

It’s hilarious, intelligent entertainment – an antidote for all the boring, mindless crap we entertain ourselves with.

FIY

Woody Harrelson was arrested for possession of marijuana during filming.
